Removing Mould From Your Walls

Blog

Mould looks bad, can smell bad and can also be bad for your health. Exposure to certain types of mould can cause allergy symptoms, such as itchy eyes, chest tightness and breathing problems. Mould spores are invisible to the naked eye and can spread around your home easily, so if you develop mould in one area of your home you should have it cleaned before the mould spreads. It can be easy to confuse mould and mildew, but mildew is less problematic than mould and tends to be white or grey. Mould is black or greenish and can be slimy or damp to the touch. It's harder to get rid of than mildew and will often penetrate porous surfaces.

Causes Of Mould On Walls

Excess moisture and condensation is the main cause of mould on walls. Any wall can develop mould, but external walls are particularly prone to mould growth due to the surfaces of these walls being colder than internal walls. Rooms with high humidity, such as bathrooms and kitchens, tend to be more likely to develop mould on the walls. As mould is a fungus, a living organism, and it can reproduce and tends to do so rapidly. This rapid reproduction rate means a small black spot on your wall can become a large black mass in as little as a few days.

Ridding Your Walls Of Mould

To truly rid your walls of mould, you'll need to establish whether the mould is only on the surface of the wall or whether it has penetrated the surface and infected the plasterboard and insulation. It's best to have a mould remediation company investigate the extent of the problem, as they are trained to safely investigate mould damage without spreading mould spores to other areas of your home, and they also have appropriate safety equipment and cleaning supplies to carry out the job properly. A small section of your wall will be opened up to determine how deep the mould infestation is, and a cleaning plan will be drawn up for your approval.

Any infected plasterboard and insulation will need to be replaced. Mould on the surface of your walls will be removed using strong fungicidal cleaners, and dehumidifiers will be used to dry out the affected room and bring the humidity down to a level that prevents further mould growth. The remediation company will also dispose of all mould-infected materials safely and can provide guidance on how to lower the humidity in your home.

If you notice mould growing on any of your walls, don't be tempted to wipe it off and hope for the best. You may simply scatter mould spores and make the problem worse. Contact a mould removal company to have it cleaned professionally.
