Two Mistakes People Make When Their Rented Garbage Chutes Get Blocked

Blog

Sometimes, people who rent garbage chutes from cleaning businesses accidentally block them up by either throwing too many items in at once or by tossing excessively large objects into them. Here are the mistakes that people in this situation tend to make.

Rattling or hitting the chute to shake free the items that caused the blockage

If the blockage is quite far down the chute and the person who rented this equipment cannot, therefore, pull the items out or dislodge them with a long stick, then they may try to shake the items free by rattling the chute or hitting it with an object (like a hammer). This decision is likely to cause more problems than it will solve.

This could lead to many issues. First and foremost, it could damage the chute. Violently rattling this equipment could, for instance, break the components that keep it clamped to the wall, which could cause the chute to collapse and crack when it collides with the ground. Hitting the chute with a hammer in a bid to dislodge the items could crack or dent it, which might, in turn, make this equipment inoperative. Secondly, if the person tries to rattle the chute from the top, they could fall due to having to lean quite far out the window to grab and shake the chute. Similarly, if they try to do this from the base and the chute collapses, it could fall onto them. In either case, they could suffer numerous injuries.

This is why, if this issue arises, the best thing for the person involved to do would be to call the cleaning business that provided the garbage chute and ask them to come out and dislodge the items in the equipment, as this is a common occurrence, and so most cleaning companies that rent out chutes have equipment they can use to quickly deal with blockages without breaking the chutes or injuring anyone.

Tossing items into the bin from a height whilst waiting for the blockage in the chute to be resolved

The other error that people make is deciding to throw items out of their windows and into the bin whilst they're waiting for the cleaning service's workers to come and resolve the blockage in the chute. People tend to do this because they are impatient and want to finish off their rubbish-disposal work as soon as they can.

If they do this, not only could their rubbish hit the exterior of the chute and damage it as it is falling, but the rubbish could also land on the bin's edge instead of inside of it, in which case it might ricochet off the edge and end up being catapulted into the air. At best, this could result in the person having to walk downstairs, go outside, collect this rubbish and put it in the bin. At worst, it might result in the rubbish landing on and causing damage to the parked vehicles that are in the vicinity of the bin.
